Lake Grace, Western Australia

entering Lake Grace location of Lake Grace, WA Fields of wheat - typical of the area around Lake Grace

Lake Grace is 347km southeast of Perth, located between the towns of Kukerin and Newdegate (53 kilometres to the east). It is a typical wheatbelt township characterised by the inevitable grain silos, bulk loading facilities and single pub. Population: 596. Postcode: 6353

The first European explorer in the area was thought to be JS Roe, who travelled through here in 1848. Lake Grace was named by surveyor F.S. Brockman in 1909 after his wife Grace (formerly Grace Bussell). The nearby shallow, salt lake is 8 kilometres to the west. As settlers cleared land, they established the towns of Newdegate in 1924, and Varley and Lake King in 1928.

The Inland Mission Hospital established in Lake Grace in 1925 by John Flynn is the last remaining in Western Australia. The building has been restored and now houses a hospital museum for visitor inspection.

The Roe Heritage Trail follows part of the route taken by explorer JS Roe in 1848 and commences at Lake King stopping at sites of historic, scenic and natural beauty along it's course.

Lions Park and Apex rest-a-while Park offer tranquil venues for shady strolls and leisurely picnics. Lake King is well known as being a stage control point for the very first Sydney to London car rally. The Lake is also the stepping off point for the track through Frank Hann National Park and Peak Charles National Park.

Holland's Track was cut by John Holland and four helpers who were determined to arrive at the Goldfields in the shortest possible time. The track ran between Broomehill and Coolgardie and was subsequently used by many prospectors and travellers whose wagon wheel ruts still can be seen on the road from Lake Grace to Newdegate.
