I took this photo at the Heia Safari Ranch (40km from Jo'burg), where I saw a Tribal Dance Show. There are two types of zebra seen in Southern Africa: the Common or Burchell's Zebra (Equus burchellii) and Hartmann's Mountain Zebra (Equus zebra hartmannae). Burchell's zebras have shadow lines between the black stripes; mountain zebras don't have shadows, but do have a gridiron pattern of black stripes just above the tail. So what kind of zebra is the one I took a photo of below? It's a donkey/zebra cross! Unlike as mule (donkey/horse cross), a "debra" is fertile, as donkeys are more closely related to zebras than horses..
![]() They can kick like a mule, too! A Zebra can lash out with a kick from the hind leg, which may break a Lion’s jaw. Zebras are grazers, but occasionally browse on leaves and scrub. They need water daily and rarely wander far from a water hole... unless it's to take a drink at the pool... |
